Unfortunately, a close family friend is not doing well; my family and I will be going to see her Dec. 12th - 16th.  All scheduled practices will be covered by one of our fantastic assistants and I will be back on deck Thursday Dec. 17th.

Lap-a-thon a success!!

On November 18th, we held our annual Lap-a-thon 5,233 laps were swum.  That’s 130,825 yards or over 74 miles.  WOW.  And still more to come.  If you need to schedule a make-up please see your coach.

We are very grateful for all your support during these tough economic times.   Every penny is greatly appreciated.  We, like everyone, are getting squeezed as the city is threatening to raise our rent and is now charging us for things that we have not been charged for in the past.  Thank you to all our families and supporters!

Special Thanks to Victoria Azevado, Jerilynn Ice and all the parent volunteers!

Holiday Party

This year we will be celebrating the holiday season on Saturday Dec. 19th from 9am – 2pm .  Every holiday season I have my team adopt a local family in need though a local non-profit. This is a better way for the kids to help a family in need and understand the value of “giving” to a family in need.  How it works:  usually I receive a wish list from the organization detailing a wish list for the family including clothing sizes, favorite colors and hobbies.  We will meet at Wal-Mart at 9am divide into teams and shop for each family member.   After we shop we will return to the pool to wrap the gifts followed by a pizza lunch.  With a belly full of pizza and hot coco we will begin our annual Red & Blue Meet, a fun inner squad meet.  We will divide the team into Team Red and Team Blue and enjoy some fun swimming.

In lieu of a ‘Secret Santa’ I am asking that each family donate $10 to help a family in need.  If you can afford more please feel free to contribute more.  We will be collecting the week Dec 13th and I will have more details for you as the date approaches.

Meet Schedule

Our 2010 meet schedule is available on our website.  Please note that the schedule is subject to change, if you have any questions please see Gadi.

Congratulations

This weekend five swimmers will be competing at the 14 – under Junior Olympics in Pleasanton CA .  Curtis, Nick, Aric, David and Kenneth.

A VERY Special Congratulation

Based on last summers results our very own Curtis was rated the fastest 11 year old boy in the country (yes in the nation) for the 100 meter breaststroke, the 200 meter breaststroke, and 3rd for the 50 meter breaststroke.  GREAT JOB Curtis!!!

Travel Meet Reminder

Our first team travel meet with Gadi will be a Junior + Meet in Santa Cruz February 13-14, 2010 .  To attend this meet you must me at least 13 years old as of 2/13/10 OR have qualifying times.  I will have more information including pricing next week.

I leave you with another article from ASCA, regarding disqualifications:

When Your Child Is Disqualified

Concern:  I've noticed that when some of our team's swimmers are disqualified the coach does not approach the official to question the call while at other times he confronts the official immediately.

The following may explain your coach’s behavior:

The coach observed the infraction, was not surprised by the infraction, noted it, and talked with the swimmer about it.  Coaches work with their swimmers every day and know each individual's difficulties with technique and tendency for mistakes.  Coaches continually work with their athletes helping them to improve technique and correct mistakes but the results are rarely instantaneous.  Swimmers take time to improve technique and eliminate mistakes.  Coaches will enter a swimmer in an event even though the swimmer is only marginally capable of performing legal strokes and turns so that the swimmer gains experience.  If the swimmer is disqualified, the coach uses it as a learning situation for the athlete.

In some sports it is expected that there be a confrontation between coach and official with every call but that has not been our way in swimming.

When there is a confrontation it is generally over a judgment call made by the official for an infraction that the athlete does not have a history of making, and, in the eyes of the coach, was not a good call.  In this case the coach will usually ask the official for a clarification of the call and the specific rule broken.  The coach will also ask the official if he was in a proper position to make such a call.
